An 11 inch radial Octant produced by the London instrument maker George Whitbread (1828-1877). The ebony framed instrument has a ivory scale, ivory name and back plate with superior quality brass fittings.

George Whitbread had interesting antecedents.On his paternal side he was related to the famous brewing family of Whitbreads.On his maternal side, he is related to the renowned instrument maker Peter Dollond.
In the original mahogany case with the trade paper of the instrument maker and reseller, Matheson & Co. of Leith.
