"MAP shewing THE PROPOSED IMPROVEMENTS in the communication between HOBSONS BAY & MELBOURNE by James Blackburn, City Surveyor, 1st. Decr. 1851." Thos Ham, Litho.
397 x 320 mm. Ruled border.
Rare map illustrating a proposed canal from just below Princes Bridge to Port Melbourne (Sandridge). The proposal included cutting a canal to by-pass Fisherman's Bend. The plan was not implemented and it is not until John Coode's canal was excavated in 1886 that the difficulties of navigating the Yarra River were resolved.
The suburb of Blackburn commemorates James Blackburn. Thomas Ham became one of the more important goldfield artists in Victoria.
An important historical map that forms part of the very scarce early printings in Victoria.
Hand coloured.
