John Hornby Maw was a English artist active in the mid-nineteenth century in England. A very accomplished artist, Maw was able to capture the sense of the scene. Better known for his finely detailed interiors, this is possibly a holiday sketch taken on the Sussex coast around Hastings where for a time as a young man he lived.
