Norman Lloyd was born in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia. He studied painting under Julian Ashton. He enlisted in the First World War and was badly wounded. After returning to Sydney he studied art and exhibited in Melbourne and Sydney. He migrated permanently to England in the early 1930's and was elected a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in 1936. He also exhibited with the Royal Academy.

He loved Mediterranean Europe and his impressionist painting style captured the light and colour of the Mediterranean coast.

He exhibited with the Societe des Artistes Francais 1947-1962. He moved permanently to France in 1974.

He is represented in the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Queensland Art Gallery and the University of Sydney Art Collection.
