Copperplate engraving illustrating the two types of nautilus. The paper nautilus is the egg container for a member of the cephlapods and is a type of octopus that inhabits the surface waters of tropic and sub-tropic waters. The pearly nautilus is a bottom-dwelling animal related to squid.
The artist, Luke Clennell is best known for his paintings of military and naval battles. His dark, brooding style in this engraving is reminiscent of the work produced for Dr. Robert Thornton's "Temple of Flora".
