Painted doorstop of an English tar. The manufacturer was Jaques of London, a company founded by Thomas Jaques, of Huguenot descent, in 1785. The company is best known as the inventors, makers and retailers of games as diverse as Tiddledy-Winks, Snakes and Ladders, and Table Tennis as well as the rights to the Stauton Chess set which became the international standard.
Probably touched-up over time but with great patina.
Jaques registered the design in 1853.
