A very original sextant made by the London instrument makers John Lilley & Son and contained with-in the original modified triangular mahogany case. The case bears the original paper label.
John Lilley & Son was established in London in 1812 and continued making nautical instruments until they amalgamated with John Gillie in 1910. After this date the firm was known as John Lilley & Son Ltd. This instrument predates this amalgamation by a few years and we would date it c1900.
The body of the instrument is anodised brass in strikingly original condition. The scale is engraved ivory. Complete with two telescopes and five filters, all in working condition.
A very good original instrument and highly recommended.
